FROM "BLAH" TO BOLD

Project manager Wendy Zhang turned her 40 year old 3-room HDB kitchen from “blah” to bold by overhauling just this one thing. Read on to find out how she made her home truly one of a kind.

Q1: What was your initial vision for your home and what design aesthetic did you set out to achieve?

My sister was responsible for the overall theme of my house actually. I like the way she designed her own home, so I entrusted this project to her when I bought this old resale flat. She chose a rather eclectic mix of textures for the walls, flooring and wardrobes but I chose the glass features myself as I wanted the glass to bring in some feng shui elements into my home.

Q2: Why did you choose this backsplash for your kitchen instead of the standard plain glass?

When I bought this home for myself, I wanted my home to stand out from the rest. I also firmly believe in feng shui and wanted my home’s design to incorporate elements of that. The kitchen backsplash showcases a mountain scape (below), which symbolises prosperity and good health. As the Chinese saying goes, “有山有水” (“there are mountains and water bodies”) and it reminds me of those Chinese water colour paintings.

At the same time, I wanted to create a welcoming and relaxing ambience in my home and glass helped me do that. Whenever I feel down, I love to look at bodies of water, like great lakes, or the sea. My kitchen backsplash reminds me of my favourite places where I go to relax or let off steam, like East Coast Park or Marina Bay. When my friends and I have our weekly steamboat meal, we love looking at this mountain scape backsplash and talking about our dreams and aspirations. The expanse of a mountain range depicted on the backsplash reminds us to keep the big picture perspective in life and persevere towards our goals.

Q3: How about the glass panels on your wardrobes? The designs seem quite unique.

Yes, these glass features were specially customised for the wardrobes in both bedrooms. I’ve never been to the Great Wall of China but I like the view, from seeing it on TV. So the wardrobe in my bedroom (below) was a natural place for me to have that image printed and installed in glass as I wanted something different from those store bought or standard built-in cupboards. I prefer neutral colours and the contrast of black and white, so the Great Wall of China fit perfectly into this colour scheme.

The wardrobe in the other room (image below) is also like a 山水画 (Chinese painting of a mountainscape and lake). I share my flat with a few friends, and they love my choice of this image for their room because it’s not just for good luck; it’s also very calming to look at.

I personally chose the images for the wardrobes and SynerG’s designers worked with me to print them on the glass panels as a feature. I was glad that the company was able to customise the glass panels according to my requirements, beyond the designs offered on the website. Thanks to SynerG, I have my very own sanctuary of rest and tranquillity right here in my home.

Love the alfresco feel and lush green spaces but have no balcony or space for a garden in your home? The confines of urban living do not have to limit your imagination! These ideas can help you bring the outdoors indoors without breaking the bank.

1. Turn functional glass surfaces into canvases -- scenes of nature and breathtaking landscapes can breathe new life into mundane spaces.

Recreate the resort vibe in your own home with printed shower enclosures in your bathroom. You can be immersed in a forest landscape complete with a bubbling brook or even install tiles that evoke a pebble beach.

The same goes for your kitchen. Instead of a plain glass backsplash, consider using printed glass to reflect breathtaking nature scenes or create an earthy feel. SynerG’s Stone and Atmos Collection feature images ranging from mountainscapes to marble and the cross section of onyx.

2. Use mirrored surfaces to reflect green spaces indoors

Place mirrors along the areas where plants are within your home to “multiply” the amount of green space.

3. Replace walls or opaque partitions with glass.
Let more light into a room and if you have a view of greenery outside your home, a glass window or partition will allow a clean line of sight to the window.

Glass walls and a glass door to the toilet opens up the space in this bedroom.

4. Opt for a lighted TV feature wall or a feature bedhead using glass that recreates the look of natural stone to evoke the feeling of being in nature.
